moving from J2.5 to J3 was created by Ben
HI, I am building a new J3 site and want to use Membership Pro latest version so will buy, but I would also like to transfer the current members across to the new site when it is ready to take over from the old. Before I start this, is there an easy way to do this or anything I need to avoid so that I don't make a mess for myself?

many thanks, Benny

Hello Benny

1. Just upgrade your Joomla site from Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3 using the built-in Joomla update process. When you do that, all users/user groups... will be migrated to Joomla 3 automatically

2. Then install latest version of Membership Pro to Joomla 3 website and you should be fine

Tuan

Hi Tuan, Im building the site inside a sub-directory as I need a new template etc and I have some plug-in customisations that will break the moment I upgrade using that method (I think?) - tbh I am very cautious as I have some current subscribers that will go nuts if I break the site, so want to get everything lined up before promoting the sub-directory site to replace the old....does ant of that make sense?

Hi Ben

The problem here is that we want at least users database upgraded using built-in Joomla update method. So I would suggest you to:

1. Make a copy of your current site somewhere

2. Run the update using Joomla updater

3. After that, export the tables listed here membershipprodoc.joomservices.com/gettin...e-site-to-a-new-site from that upgraded site, import it to the new site which you are building

4. Install latest version of Membership Pro to the new site

That should be the way to go. The key point here is that we need the users database table from Joomla 2.5 site upgraded properly to Joomla 3

Just for information, base on our experience, you might get trouble when update from Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3. The reason is because some upgrade URLs were changes from http to https, while it still uses http in the code of Joomla 2.5 website (from our experience with helping a customer in the past). At at that time, we even had to modify some Joomla 2.5 code to be able to run the update. So if you get trouble, you might have to hire someone with experience to run the update for you

thanks Tuan.... I now understand....I have daily backups of my current site, so as my new template design is far from ready to go live, do you think the following makes sense?:

1. Update as you describe - this I believe will break my site temporarily

2. Export the tables as you describe

3. Revert old site to back up J2.5 so it works again, with the J3 site still in the sub-directory

4. import the tables as you describe to J3 site & install latest Membership Pro

I think this is repeating back what you have said, with the added reversion of old site backup before importing tables to J3 site?

The new site isn't ready to go live, otherwise I would just take the plunge, do it and fight the fire.

I might be worrying about nothing but i am sure some of my components aren't J3 compatible so my sites features will fall over as soon as I try and upgrade.

I would not upgrade directly on your live site like that, then restore the original site again. The site could be messed up (due to the new files from new Joomla version)

So I would still take a backup copy of the site, and run the update elsewhere (like in a sub-folder of the current site), that would be more safe

For information, if we run the upgrade ourself, we would have to charge you 70$.

Tuan

BTW, why not upgrading directly to Joomla 4? From what I see, Joomla 3 will go end of life on August next year (after that, only security issues will be patched). So if you build the site right now, better start with Joomla 4 instead of using Joomla 3.
