I'd forgotten all about this, Bernhard. I think we have a basic business account - waiting for our Treasurer to get it changed to a charity account - but although we've had some subscriptions for 12 months, we've not had any recurring ones yet, whether through PayPal or credit card.
I think there was another topic where this was mentioned and I don't think there were any problems using a basic business account but I think we need Tuan's knowledge and expertise to confirm!

Honestly, I don't know about it, too, as I have never received a recurring payment. However, I believe:
1. If users use credit card for subscribing for recurring subscription, the only way is that he contacts admin, ask him to cancel recurring subscription
2. If user has Paypal account, he can login to his PayPal account to find and cancel the recurring subscription
Regards,
Tuan

Do you know yet if this is correct? If people subscribe, there's no way for them to cancel their subscription without having a paypal account? s2member is a similar plugin for WordPress, and I'm 99% sure that users there can cancel paypal recurring subscriptions right on the website and it sends the notification to paypal. Read somewhere here that it's not possible for such thing because paypal doesn't allow it. Is that possibly old info or incorrect?

Hi Tim
I don't see how it is possible. Or it is only possible if admin has an account which can calls PayPal API (some links which I have read in the past thereforei.am/2012/07/03/cancelling-subs...express-checkout-api )
Look like PayPal charges you some money fee if you want to use that kind of API call, so Yes, it is still not possible
Right now, if you want to allow users to cancel recurring subscription from within your site, you need to use one of the three payment plugins below:
1. PayPal Pro
2. Authorize.net
3. Stripe
Stripe is the best one at the moment

Surely we need a way to fully manage the lifecycle of a customer?

So if a user wants to cancel, they log into their paypal, cancel the subscription, and then what do we see in Membership Pro? How does membership Pro know that the subscription has been cancelled? Or will the payment just fail at the next try and become a debt without us knowing it's cancelled?Tuan Pham Ngoc wrote:

Hi Andre
Yes. When users cancel it, Membership Pro will know about this cancellation and display recurring cancelled flag in his subscription
At the end of current subscription duration, no payment will be processed, so the subscription will become expired
