Recurring payments through PayPal was created by Ian Shere
I'm planning to use M/ship Pro to start recurring payments through PayPal. Ongoing, PayPal will handle doing the business of the recurring billing. However, I would like to know if M/Ship Pro will still send out emails, say, a week before the payment is due to remind customers a payment is due, and then send an invoice once the payment is made. No payments will be made via M/Ship Pro, just the initial setup.

Hi Ian

At the moment, Membership Pro won't send reminder email. It will only send email when payment is completed (containing the invoice, too)

Ah. I thought Membership Pro sent out an email telling the subscriber that payment was nearly due.

A slightly different question: do recurring payments work if a credit/debit card is used using PayPal (rather than using a PayPal account) and how would a subscriber cancel it?

Hi Alan

To be honest, I haven't used recurring payment myself, so I don't know whether it works. You can try it yourself, if PayPal allows you to subscribe, then it will work

For this kind of subscription, since subscribers don't have PayPal account, I guess subscribers will have to contact admin of the site to cancel the subscription (admin will then need to login to his PayPal account to cancel the subscription)

Regards,

Tuan

Following on from this, I'm still not sure if PayPal can be used to process a credit card recurring payment - ie using PayPal's 'Check Out as a Guest' feature and whether and how they could cancel a subscription done this way.

Has anyone any experience of this or can recurring payments only be made using a PayPal account?

I have clients set up recurring payments through PayPal on both Debit and Credit cards. Works without issue. I use PayPal Extended payments, not Business. They don't send emails which is annoying (PayPal are pretty lazy when it comes to helping their customers). I use letter.io to send reminders.

Thanks, Ian. That's good to know. We only have a business account, not PayPal Extended (I don't even know what that is!) - perhaps Tuan can say whether this should work OK with Paypal Business?

I assume if someone wanted to cancel the recurring payment they'd have to contact their card company?

Can you explain what you mean?

Hi Alan

Sorry, wrong URL. it should be later.io/ - go there, sign up and start enjoying. It allows you to schedule emails (which you set up on their site) and send them on multiple dates in the future. It's awesome!

PP Extended Payments is an upgrade on a Standard PP account - not as featured as a full Business account. It's $19.99 a month, and it's main feature (to me anyway) is that clients can sign up for recurring payments without the need to have a PP account of their own.

Ian

Thanks for that - I'll take a look.

I suspect recurring payments will work with PayPal Business (it seems an essential feature for a business account to be able to accept subscriptions) - I've tried looking through PayPal's FAQs and help, but it's vast and impenetrable and it's not always clear what PP product they're referring to!

Hopefully, Tuan will be able to clarify: do recurring card payments work with a PayPal Business account and how does a customer cancel them - through their card company?

Hi Alan,
could you get more information on that topic? - I would need information about on how OS Membership and PayPal Standard recurring subscriptions work with Credit Card payments, too.
Kind regards,
Bernhard
