Category background colors do not show in the calendar

The primary category is also used to built URL of the event. So if you change primary category, the URL of event also be changed

And No, primary category does not need to be top level category as you thought. So in your case, I guess change Primary/Main category of the event to the sub/child category will just work well

Ooo that's a good point about the URLs changing, I didn't think about that. I'm glad we covered this before I began my large-scale promotion.
