Problem at PayPal end when using PayPal Standard Checkout Plugin was created by David Unwin
We are having problems with some users (not all) not being able to pay by debit/credit cards.
The problems occur when they get transferred to PayPal.
They get different messages such as
'We're sorry something seems to have gone wrong?'
and
'bank error unable to process payment'
It also seems to happen if the user does not have a PayPal account and they are asked to enter their mobile number and PostCode(ziip) together with their address.
Has anybody else had any experience of this type of problem??
Any help would very much be appreciated.
Kind regards
David

Hi David
This is actually handled by PayPal (on PayPal website), so I think you should contact PayPal and ask them about this problem directly
Regards,
Tuan

Hi Tuan,
I do realise this is nothing to do with EB, it is a PayPal issue.
The reason for the post was to see if any other users had similar problems with PayPal.
I am not sure about users in other countries, but here in the UK it is a real issue getting support from PayPal
KInd regards
David

Hi David
For this kind of issue, I guess PayPal is the only partner can check and answer you. Sadly, I think PayPal system, sometime, is not reliable these days. If you continue getting more problems, maybe switch to a different payment gateway like Stripe could be an option

Hi Tuan,
I agree with your comments re PayPal. It is difficult for us to change at the moment as we are in the middle of our Event Season. But I think for 2024 will look at Stripe as an alternative for both EB and Membership Pro.
Kind regards
David

Hi David, I am in Australia but we have also had trouble with the reliability of Paypal payments through this software. I decided to add Stripe as an additional option for a trial, and so far I have found it MUCH more reliable, and better for the user as it processes payments directly on-site without having to send them to another URL, which I suspect is the reason for the increased reliability. We are now looking at dumping Paypal altogether. Perhaps you could adopt the same approach ie ADD Stripe as an extra option initially as a trial (rather than replace Paypal) like we did, and see how it goes ? Hope this helps.

G'Day from the UK.
Thanks for 'heads up' on Stripe.
Quick couple of questions on how you set that up on your EB system.
Did you add Stripe as an Addition to PayPal or just test it before cutting over to Stripe? from your comment it sounded like your ran them side by side. Did this not cause confusion for your users having 2 payment options?
Is there a 'sandbox' type facility to test Stripe like there is in PayPal to test?
Kind regards
David

Yes David, I am running them side by side, I just added Stripe as another payment option, now the user can select the payment type from two choices, Paypal or Stripe. If they select Stripe it opens up the form for submitting the card details directly in the page, much better! If they select Paypal, it still sends them off, and sometimes they come back (lol) Did one Stripe test and was sold, went live! Seamless...and so far no complaints from users ... we are planning to quietly dump Paypal as a next step so that all payments will be accountable through the Stripe account... Hope this helps!

Thanks Tuan and Infoweb,
Very useful information.
I do not know about other countries, but here in the UK, Stripe's commission charges appear to be slightly lower than PayPal.
Thanks again.
