How should I configure a variant? was created by spitjack
I have a small catalog of downloadable self-published items (sheet music). I now have written variants to five of these items - same music, but different instrumentation, sku, and price. Since I don't see a 'variants' option, there is no obvious way to post version A and version B prices simultaneously, each with their own add-to-cart button. How would you suggest I do this without complicating the site with extra pages and links? I don't consider these to be an upsell or a discount relative to each other, just variants to suit different customer needs.

a 'spit' is a rod upon which savory food was roasted, turned in ancient times by a worker called a 'jack', a middle English word for an ordinary laborer (eg jack of all trades, steeplejack, lumberjack). Today, this is done by a 19th C machine.

(I think your answer will be options - A, B, or both. The misfit is that the product doesn't have a base price with upsell or discount depending on option. I am not using category pages so I am stumped at finding a way to show both variants with their associated prices at once. Maybe two product modules will work?)

Edit: I have found I can fake it by using a separate product item in the module - categories doesn't work if short description is enabled, only one item shows and the rest of the page (and the console) is white. The solution I've found is a grok, not really an example of efficient use of Eshop. I will leave this ticket open as the short description failure on categories seems to be a bug; you must be busy as you are usually quick to respond.

Hello Spitjack,

If the Product Options feature does not work as you expect, then I am afraid that you need to setup the separated items as you tried. What's problem that you have with product short description is enabled?

Sincerely, Giang

This message superseded by the next item

I have to not only create a separate product, I have to load them as separate modules.

Currently there are two items that belong to the same category, and they are the only two items in that category. If I load the category as a module:
  • if short description is not enabled both products appear but there is no information
  • if short descritption is enabled only one product is shown, and the rest of the page is completely blank - and nothing at all appears in the console.
So at the moment I am forced to use individual modules to fake product variants. To my customers, a title is the product - and the version for two trumpets is not a discount from the brass quintet. They are two versions of the exact same thing though they sometimes have different prices. This is the same with books - hard cover is not an upsell, soft cover is not a discount; they are variants of the exact same product. The base sku is identical with something appended (or prepended) at the end, eg 5051A and 5051B.

My need now is that clicking the image or title should not go to another product page. They are already on a product page displaying the two variants. Only Add to Cart should be functional. Where do I override the outbound link on the modules?

Now I am getting the look and feel I want by using eshopproduct 1 and eshopproduct 25, the two variants configured as separate products. Shown in the private area is a link to Plan A: It looks right, but the add to cart buttons seem to not work as expected. See private message for details. Is it not possible to put the two products on one page? I don't want to use the module because that is a) four extra steps, and b) they forward to the page when all I want is 'add to cart'.

At the bottom of that page I am trying Plan B to see if I can make the category module work (only two extra steps instead of four). The cart buttons at least function the way I expect, even with short description enabled. So as a fallback, I can grit my teeth and use this. Note, {loadposition } doesn't work, so I can't load a module semantically; I need to use {loadmoduleid ###} instead.

How do I make the image non-clickable?

Hello spitjack,

To make the image non-clickable, it requires to override to the layout of EShop. Please submit a new ticket to EShop category so I can help you to check and implement that for you.

Sincerely, Giang

Ticket submitted - looking forward to your instructions. Thank you.

But a simple bit of css worked. FBO:

    .eshop-image-block a {
        pointer-events: none !important;
    }
