On renewal confirmation the email contains no content; just html formatting. It has worked in the past and emails to the admin work.
A few months ago I used the Softaculous Apps Installer to copy the existing site for testing. In the test system the emails did not work but I assumed that there was a path in a DB record that was broken and didn't worry about it.
On the admin side I can see and edit all the messages.
What should I be looking for to get the email content back? I've included the source of the email.

I would say that it happens because wrong settings somehow. Maybe in the plan settings, there are empty messages entered (no text is displayed but there are empty HTML tags)
You can submit a support ticket sending us super admin account of the site and tell us ID of the renewal subscription record which has this empty email issue
I will check and correct it for you

The plan specific messages had some HTML tags. The editor I'm using (ARKEditor) always adds some tags at the end of the page like this:
<style type="text/css">
</style>
It adds this every time the text is saved. With articles it doesn't matter. I guess every time a plan is changed and saved the editor is invoked for each message and a <style></style> is added to the end over and over.
I removed all these tags and the emails worked again. There is still a
<p> </p>

</style>
in each message but there's no way to remove that with the existing editor.
I don't use the default Joomla html editor because it strips out JavaScript (which I use on some pages).

Not sure why the editor added these empty html tags. Maybe you should create a different super admin account, configure it to use TinyMCE (or maybe install and use JCE editor). Then if you want to change some kind of messages in Membership Pro, use that account instead

I switched over to JCE. The different editors each have their pros and cons.
