Custom Fields - Message

Can you explain the custom field option "Message" to me? I'd like to add a link to our donations page from the registration form for free events. The message field type seemed like it might be a winner, but I'm not seeing messages displaying at all. The setup is in the screenshot below. I should be seeing something where the arrow is pointing in the other screenshot. It works if I change it to a heading.
