Backward compatability of payment plugins

I am currently using Membership Pro version 1.6.9
If I install a new payment plugin, will it be backward compatible with this version or will I need to upgrade Membership Pro?
I am particularly interested in the GoCardless plugin.

Unfortunately, all our payment plugins now require Membership Pro version 2.2.x+ (as it uses new payment processing API which only available from version 2.2.0)
So if you want to use GoCardless payment plugin, you will need to upgrade your site to Membership Pro 2.2.1 first.
Also, please note that the GoCardless payment plugin only supports onetime subscription. It doesn't support recurring subscription

Can you explain a little more about the recurring subscription support.
Do you just mean that I can't use GoCardless's own built in recurring subscription support? I can still use all of the features of Membership Pro like offering renewal subscriptions, etc. Just each renewal will be handled as a separate transaction, correct?
Do you have any documentation for this plugin? For example, how does it handle the situation where a user signs up but the payment does not clear? Is the membership active immediately or does it receive feedback from GoCardless once the payment clears and activate it then?

I missed your last question. Below are my answers:

=> Yes, that's correct.

=> To be honest, I haven't used GoCardless myself, I just use an existing payment API to build the payment plugin, so I am unsure about the answer. However, I believe if payment is not clear, members will still be pending. Once payment is cleared, Membership Pro will activate the subscription record. If you could try and update us with the result (if you use GoCardless), that would be great
