Membership Pro - Recurring subscription

I am interested in membership pro - however I have one important question:

If I have a subscriber subscribing to a recurring subscription ($xx per month for 6 months) would this subscriber need to go and cancel th e recurring payment in Paypal? Or is this one done automatically?

No, the payment will be cancelled automatically after 6 months (6 payments). While setting up the subscription plan, just please set "Number of Payments" property to 6.

After that, It should work as expected

Great that is good to know, I heard that Paypal subscriptions always need to be stopped by the user in Paypal which is of course a mess.

That's correct. However, in case you set Number of Payments for the plan, it will be stopped automatically after reaching that number of payments
