Edocman feature questions was created by Ari
I have a few pre-sales questions about Edocman. I'm comparing whether to purchase it or another similar Joomla component.
Does Edocman allow:
  • From the Front-End
    • Upload more than one document at at time into a category
      • Drag-and-drop multiple docs to upload into a category
      • Bulk-upload documents into a category
      • Upload archive of documents (eg .zip) to unpack into category
    • Automatically generate thumbnails
      • Automatically select stock thumbnail based on document type or extension
    • Edit documents
      • Replace document file with another file (eg a newer version)
      • Check out files for editing and check back in
    • Preview documents before downloading
      • What document types can be previewed (doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, etc?
  • What types of documents can be indexed for search?

Could you please respond to above in-line?
Is there a demo available of the frontend interface? Or Screen shots? All I see are the back end screen shots.

Thanks,
Ari

Hi

You can view the demo at edocman.joomdonation.org/

However, the upload features you requested (Drag-and-drop multiple docs to upload into a category, Bulk-upload documents into a category, Upload archive of documents (eg .zip) to unpack into category) are not supported in the extension. For this need, seems Docman will meet your need

What about the thumbnails, preview and indexing questions?
(Since I already have a product from you, I'd rather look here first before another vendor)

It generate thumbnail for the documents depends on the file type of that document (for example, if you upload a pdf file and don't choose a thumbnail, the system will used pdf icon as thumbnail for that document).

For indexing, only pdf is available. Doc is also supported but it might not be indexed properly. We don't have preview feature (what's preview ?). Maybe you want users to click on View button to view content of that document (the PDF files?) instead of downloading it. If that's the case, then the feature is supported.

I guess you can purchase it to try. Then if it doesn't work for your need, you can request for refund :).

Sounds good. The features you describe above sound similar to docman - with exception of multiple upload from the front end.
Can multiple categories be applied to a document?

Yes, EDocman allows you to assign one document to multiple categories. The "multiple upload from the front end" is a very nice feature from Docman and I will consider adding support for EDocman in the near future.
