Google Maps Alternative - OpenStreetMaps - will this be introduced? was created by MelanieB
Hi,
In a thread a few weeks ago you mentioned the possibility of using OpenStreetMaps as an alternative to Google Maps - is this still on the cards?
Is anyone currently using Google Maps (having entered their credit card details as they now require)? If yes, how are you finding it?
Is it possible to set the daily spend limit to zero so that once the usage limit is met it just disables the map until the following day? I am imagining Google will not allow us to set it to zero.
I have about 5 different google maps apis on my site and I am a little concerned about leaving my credit card details with Google and waking up one morning with a massive bill!
I do hope we can move to OpenStreetMap.
Would like to know other people's thoughts on the new charges from Google.
Kind regards

I need this too, VERY much. I'm not paying google a thin dime as I don't trust them at all to be honest about the use and there's no way they're getting access to my credit card.

Hi,
Actually, it's difficult to switch Google Map to Open Map. OS Property doesn't use Google Map for showing property location, it also uses Google Map services in various functions like: Get direction, Radius search..etc
Currently, we don't have enough experience to change Map function, but we will consider to find solution to implement it in future.
Thanks
Dam

Hi,
recently another component I use called Jreviews introduced a great feature for Google maps which you can read about here:
forum.jreviews.com/topic/30663-new-geoma...e-maps-api-requests/
Maybe this could be added to OSProperty maps? At least until the Open Street Maps can replace the Google maps?
Anyway, thought I would share this just in case it is an option

Hi Mel,
Currently, we still don't have solution to switch Google Map to Open Street Map, because the search function of Open Street Map isn't good enough.
Thanks

Hi Dam,
did you read the link? It wasn't a replacement for Google maps, instead it is a way to restrict charges. Basically the Google maps are blurred out until the user clicks on the map to view. It stops the map view counts in Google charging for page loads etc. So it it only when the map is actually clicked that it is counted. If you read the link it explains it better. It basically means we can keep using the google maps - having more control over how we eventually get charged.
It is just whether it is difficult to add the extra settings fields in Google map component.
Easysocial have something similar where the map only shows if a 'click to view' link is clicked
Hope that explains better

Hi,
is it possible to DISABLE google map from the template? I need the template to sell my own properties (one location) and do not need this at all.
How do I disable it? I didn´t find it among the modules just to switch it off...
Thanks
