ANSWERED Property pictures appear with black bands

ANSWERED Property pictures appear with black bands was created by Hans
When adding pictures to a property, I always get black bands on the left and right, or top and bottom, which creates very ugly results.
Obviously I can resize the original pictures so no bands will be generated, but that's really too much hassle for any realtor.
How can this behavior be changed so I don't end up with these black borders around the pictures?
