Thanks I didn’t realise the ‘Locations’ link was over on the left, I should have paid more attention.
After I started using the update location feature I discovered another problem. I discovered that the information for Australia is completely wrong. I am located in Australia so I know.
Your text file uses electoral boundaries for Australia, not states. No one in Australia ever uses electoral boundaries for anything - other than at election times.
This in itself is not a major issue as I can obtain the correct data and upload it myself but I am concerned about the accuracy of your other location files as I am working on a global site and the states/regions and cities need to be accurate for all countries.
Please can you tell me by what means are the location text files produced and how are they checked for accuracy?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Mel,
OS Property uses the geocode location data from OSClass: geo.osclass.org/downloads/ You can check the Australia location from this file to confirm it.
If you have better location source, you can share it to us. I am appreciate it.
Thanks
Dam

In researching to find a list of cities for Australia I found a free world cities database from Maxmind but unzipped it is 148 megabytes. In the database there are 11,000 Australian cities. How many must there be for USA?
It’s just not practical to list all the cities from all the countries – the database would be too big. If you just include major cities than what happens when you have a house in a city which is not listed?
A better alternative is to just have a list of countries and the users add the state or region and city or suburb when they fill the listing form. The state/region and city/town/suburb can be added to the database as children of the country when they submit the form. This way only states and cities with houses will show in the search form.
You can see an example of it working on these sites:
homeswapholidays.com/search.html
www.silverdiscountproperties.com/index.p...age_display&PageID=1
In the first example even the countries are added by the new user when they submit their house. So only countries with houses are listed, not all countries of the world.
Is this not a more practical way to have worldwide house listings?
I think the listing process is called chained search or chained select. I know nothing about programming but I think there is a jquery plugin which may be able to achieve this: jquery-plugins.net/chained-selects-jquery-plugin
Is this something that can be done?

Hi Mel,
In the first time, we also thought about your idea. But the problem is different customers can't enter the correct places. For example: Hanoi is capital of Vietnam. Customer A can write Hanoi, customer B can write Ha noi, customer C can write Hà Nội. And the result is we will have 3 cities in the database while in fact, they are the same.
And 3 those citiy names will be shown at the dropdown select list "City" and make user confuse.
I think, the current solution of OS Property is the best, but we alway welcome the contribution from customers to make OS Property become better everyday.
If someone can send us the location of database of all countries. We are really appreciate it and we can convert it to location db for other customers.
Thanks
Dam
