How does the Refund function work on recurring plans?

Refund only process refunds for a subscription which you refund. It does not effect other subscription records from recurring subscription

If we refund a subscription payment then I assume it also cancels that subscription. Therefore we don't need to refund and cancel as separate steps?

It's two independent action, so you sill need to do it in two separate steps:

- Cancel Subscription will cancel recurring subscription. That will stop the subscription from continue being renewed
- Refund will only refund payment for that subscription.

In short, you will need to do it in two separate steps. Just refund is not enough
