Member upgrades to paid then lapses

I have 2 plans. Free for all Registered users (lifetime) and paid (annual renewal).
When a member upgrades to paid his free plan membership becomes expired.
Then, if they do not renew the paid plan membership becomes expired BUT their free plan membership should become live again but it remains expired!.
How can I fix this ?

There is actually nothing to fix here. That's how the extension is designed to work and it does not handle this special case you described here. For this, you might have to develop a plugin to enable the original subscription if you need to have it works as described
