Planning to update a website

Hi.
I will be updating a website which uses Membership pro and Events Booking.
My plan is to clone the site and build it up offline then once it is all ready - what is the best way to get the data from the still live site to sync with the new one? Is it as simple as using the Export/Import or is there a best way to do this?

Yes, that would make it is simpler to move the data from current site to new site when it is ready
