Hello,
I have a few subscription plans that I would like to change from non-recurring to recurring.
How can I change them to recurring such that existing subscribers to those plans will either 1) have their plans changed to recurring or 2) be able to renew their plans as recurring (preferred).

It was my understanding that, if I changed a plan from non-recurring to recurring, all subsequent new and renewal subscriptions on that plan would change to recurring. (that's what I want to happen)
However, I notice that when I do change an existing plan from non-recurring to recurring, the "Renew Membership" option and its Process Renewal" button go away from the "Membership Pro » User Profile" menu item. It would appear that existing users who have subscriptions to that plan would not be able to renew, and thus would not enter into the recurring subscription.

Confer this discussion from February 2020: Changing Plan to Recurring Subscription
As well as this one from February 2020: No manual renewal options when the plan is recurring

Here are the settings from one of the plans:

Here is what the User Profile menu item looks like (for an existing subscriber to the plan) when the plan is set to NOT recurring:

Here is what the User Profile menu item looks like (for an existing subscriber to the plan) when the same plan has then been changed to recurring:

Here is the Membership Pro configuration:

Hi Ari

1. You can change a plan from one time subscription plan to recurring subscription plan.

2. However, all existing subscribers are still none-recurring subscriptions

3. For these subscribers, they an renew subscription to become recurring. However, due to the way recurring subscription works, they can only renew the subscription when their current subscription expired (to prevent one user to have multiple recurring subscriptions of the same plan)

Hope my answers are clear to you

Regards,

Tuan

Thank you Tuan,
However, this would require "one time" subscriptions to become expired before they can be allowed to renew as "recurring".
Is there a way to allow the members to renew their subscription from "one time" into "recurring" without having to allow them to expire first?

Hi Ari

No, it's not possible. The system is designed to work like that (to prevent one users from renewing his subscription again even if he is having an active recurring subscription, thus being charged twice)

So in your case, users can only renew it after his current subscription expired

Thanks Tuan.
I suppose the next question is: what happens if we later decide to change a membership plan from recurring to not?
  1. Does it gracefully go back to a subscription that requires manual renewal at the end of the subscription term?
  2. Does Membership Pro then automatically tell PayPal to stop the yearly fee for each of the plan's subscribers?
Again, thanks for a great product and for helping us to use it properly.

Hello

1. For existing subscription, it will continue be automatic renewal

2. No, it's not. If you wan to make it become manual renewal, you will need to view the subscription record and cancel that recurring subscription (for each subscription). To do that, click on recurring subscription record to see the details and press Cancel Subscription button in the toolbar to cancel the recurring subscription
