Import and assign group members?

Is it possible to import group members and assign them to the appropriate group membership?
I've been able to import ordinary members using the import option, but need something that can do the same for a large number of group members.
Alternatively, in the back end, is there a way of assigning individual users to a group membership

Yes , it's possible. In the import file, just add a new column called group_admin_id . Set data for that column to Id of user account of the group admin and it should be fine
