Is it possible to setup a subscription package of '6 months' with the user being charged via Paypal automatically every 1 month an 'X' amount of money?

Or does the user need to pre-pay the entire amount that corresponds to 6 months?

Yes, it's possible and simple to setup. You just need to setup a plan with following parameters:

1. Subscription Length: 1 Month

2. Price: 100 (replace 100 with the amount you want users to pay each month)

3. Recurring Subscription: Yes

4. Number Payments: 6

After that, it will work as expected (and automatically)
