Membership ID changes when subscriptions are renewed

I have now gone live, having imported the membership database from CB via a csv file. This included a unique four digit number as membership ID into the MP tag for each subsription..
On completing the first batch of offline subscription renewals I see that the membership number is being changed to a new number. I do not want this to happen.
In configuration I have subscription renew behaiour set to update, generate membership ID set to yes, reset membership id every year to no.
If I turn off generate membership id to no, then the membership ID is set to 000 on subscription renewal
Please, how can I stop the change of membership id happening?

Membership ID should remain unchanged. Maybe it causes by "renew behavior set to update", could you please set it to Create New Subscription, then try again to see whether the issue still happens?

I confirm that by Setting behavoir to 'Create new subscription', the change to the membership ID does not take place at renewal.
