Confused about User Groups? was created by Kevin Morrison
First off I am still trying to wrap my head around Joomla ACL which is complex to say the least. In reading the documents regarding group integration some things are compounding my problems. First thing it says in Joomla Groups Integration is to access User Groups and create a new group and make it a child of Registered. Then I should be able to go to the plan and assign it to the newly created group. Problem is it does not work that way, unless the parameter on the Basic Information tab where it says Access is not what it is referring to? I need to actually create an Access Level because the plans in Membership Pro do not see groups, only access levels. So that is confusing, then it also says when a user signs up for a subscription plan they will be assigned to the "Joomla user group(s)" I want. This says I can assign them to multiple groups but I am only allowed to assign them to one on the basic information page, so not sure what you mean when you say group(s)?
So I have a vague idea what to do but the documents are vague and not very clear on where to do what and reading them a dozen times I am convinced they are incorrect on how to set this up. In the Resources Access Restriction>Use Joomla ACL section it tells me basically the same thing as the previous mentioned section of the documents but then it says to refer back to Joomla groups integration to assign subscribers of the plan to Subscribers group, which that alone is confusing but the way I am reading it is it wants me to do what I mentioned above that cannot be done?
How does the parameter on the basic information tab "Access" work into what is on the Joomla Groups Settings tab? Couple that with what I see on that tab for active subscriptions I can choose assign to Joomla Groups and Remove from Joomla Groups. So am I to assume if they are already a subscriber of a group I need to remove them from that group and indicate what group to assign them to? Why is there seemingly contradictory parameters? If I am assigning them as active to a group or groups, what is the point of having the option to remove them from a group? All of this is confusing and I am not understanding what I need to do?
I dont have just a simple need for membership here, we have multiple plans that all have content that needs to be available only to that group. So I need a way to setup each plan to only have access to select articles and said articles cannot be accessible to any other group. Is that even possible with Membership Pro or am I just fighting a losing battle here?
Is there an administrator Demo login possibly where I could see this in action? I might be able to get a better idea where I am going wrong if I could see it working. The demo on the site does not appear to have an admin login area to check this out unfortunately. I tried to login with the given user/password but even there I am not sure what I am supposed to be able to see? The 6months one does not work and when I signed in with the 9months one it just took me to a page that said logout. I hope there is more to this when I set it up on my site than an expensive way for them to pay for the ability to login and out and not offer anything else?

Hello Kevin
1. The Access parameter under each plan is only used to control who can see the plan (and sign up for it). Usually, it should be set to Public
2. If you want to assign subscribers of a plan to certain Joomla user group, you can use this plugin membershipprodoc.joomservices.com/joomla-groups-integration
3. However, from what you mentioned, seems you want to give subscribers to access to the articles you want, if so, I think this method would be the one you can use membershipprodoc.joomservices.com/resour...s-to-joomla-articles
4. We don't give access to backend of demo site because we don't want customers to change the demo data which we prepared, sorry
Regards,
Tuan

Thanks Tuan, very useful info and I totally understand not giving access to the admin. Might be worth setting it up so that it refreshes on given intervals. I have actually been looking for a way to do this myself for my client demo of Joomla but I know it can be done as I have seen it on several developer sites. Sure would be awesome to see how the developer has it working to get a better idea how to move forward. However with a bit more mucking around I think I have come to a method that works for me. I just created a category for the course and then set that as viewable only to the subscriber of that course. I am of course assuming once i assign a category to a course it becomes the owner of that category and everything in it and cannot in any way be viewed some other way. Am I assuming this to be correct?
