a 'spit' is a rod upon which savory food was roasted, turned in ancient times by a worker called a 'jack', a middle English word for an ordinary laborer (eg jack of all trades, steeplejack, lumberjack). Today, this job is usually referred to as a 'pitmaster'.

When I add a profile view module to a page (standard Joomla user profile, as per a different post), I get a time out error (recursive loop, it looks like).

You can only access to user profile view if you have subscribed for at least one subscription plan on your site. If you haven't subscribed for any plan, then you cannot access to that module (might see the error as you said)
