Hi Philip
To be honest, this requirement is not very clear to me, so I don't know how to answer (I am thinking that it is not possible to handle this requirement)
So if it is possible, please explain more details about your requirement so that I can understand and give you final answer
Regards,
Tuan

A member sign up for the first time and they have to pay a joining fee which is only required to pay once, when his membership finishes after a year he is then only required to pay for membership fee. Hope this makes sense
Enrolment - Joining Fee + Membership
Next Year - Membership only

Hello Philip
If so, you can setup it using standard feature in Membership Pro. Just setup a plan with the following information:
1. Setup fee (the Joining Fee in your case)
2. Price is membership price (the amount you want users to pay each year)
3. Subscription Length: 1 Year
Please setup a plan like that, then check the result, it will work as expected
Regards,
Tuan

Yep, I've done that so how do I then get the user to renew on a different plan without the joining fee for a further year

He can just renew for the same plan, not new plan. He can login, access to user profile menu item (you should create that menu item to link to user profile menu option in Membership Pro), see the renew option available and renew his subscription
When he renews, he won't be charged setup fee anymore (setup fee will only be charged for first sign up)

Just create a menu item to link to user profile menu option (or renew membership menu option) of Membership Pro
Subscriber, can access to that menu item, choose the renew option and renew membership

Hi Phillip
I don't understand your last question. You just need to setup a subscription plan as I mentioned before and it should work fine:
1. When users sign up for the first time, they will have to pay both subscription plan price + setup fee which you configured for the plan
2. Later, when he renew his membership, he will only have to pay the plan of the price. He won't have to pay setup fee anymore
Better sign up for the plan, subscribe for it. Check the amount you have to pay
Then renew the membership, check the amount you have to pay to understand the difference
After that, it should work OK
Regards,
Tuan
