Assignation to Joomla Users groups

If I want that my members (Membership Pro plan) to be assigned to a Joomla Users group, do I understand that I absolutely need to create a custom field? What can I do if I don't have any option in my plan to assign to a user group? I create a fake option? Why it's not in the basic option of each plan?
