Recurring Payments just how do they work?

My apologies I am kind of a newbie to this extension, I set up membership pro using Authorize.net. I want to use the 5 recurring payment model, but this doesn't seem to be working for me. So lets say my membership event cost $195 I have to setup the form to accept 5 payments divided by the cost of this membership. I read the document but I don't see my example, can I do what I am trying to do?
