So I'm testing the registration system Membership Pro 2.2.1, Joomla! 3.4.8 Stable, and I'm running into some caveats:
1. User can register, but an email to the registrant is never received to activate account; only the receipt.
2. I created a User Group for new Members to be assigned called "Members", but none of them are being assigned to it in the Joomla User Group area.
3. Is there no way to activate a new registrant in the backend if I choose a different Configuration setting?
Attached are my settings.
To add: I'm also using this in conjunction with EventBooking.

The question is: After users sign up for the subscription plan, what's the status of the subscription record? Is it Pending or Active?
Please check it and get back to me with the answer so that I can check it further

I was able to look back and the record was 'Pending'. When the payment is an 'Offline Payment', this would make sense. But I suppose once the system starts to accept online payments, the Admin setting would be changed so the user would automatically have an Enabled status without having to activate their account. So I guess not only would the 'Only create user account when membership active/approved' be set to 'No', but also 'Send activation email' would need to be set to 'No' as well.

Yes. When you use online payment method and actually make payment, the system will work as expected

What about when it's pending?
We accept offline payments, and want to receive an email when the customer just signs up so we can unpending them.

Hi Christopher
With your setup, the user account will only be created when you change subscription status from Pending to Active. If you want the account to be created for users right after they sign up (and notification email is sent to you), please change config option "Only create user account when membership active/approved" in Membership Pro to No
