Is it possible to modify the body text of the email sent to imported users that contains their login details?

Yes. You can. Infact, that email sent by Joomla core API, so you will need to edit a language file to change the message. Open the file administrator\language\en-GB\en-GB.plg_user_joomla.ini, find the language item below and change it to meet your need:

PLG_USER_JOOMLA_NEW_USER_EMAIL_BODY
