Is it possible to set up a plan with OPTIONAL auto-renewals (e.g., with a checkbox indicating auto-renewal), or to have a plan be auto-renewing, does it have to be a completely separate plan?
At the moment, it is not possible. So if you want to be recurring, you will need to setup a separate plan. Will think more about this case and might add support for it in future release !
