problem when error in payment info

Hi,
If a user enters the wrong payment information, they're not notified until after they're made a joomla user. So, when they hit the back button to try again, their username and email address (the info they entered in step 1) is no longer available because it's already in the joomla user system.

Is there a way to halt the user creation until the payment goes through? Or, is there a way to change the credit card info without having to use a different password and email?

What payment method you are using? Please let me know so that I can think about it to see whether we can find a solution for this problem.

we were using the authorize.net payment plugin, but have decided to use AEC as we're a bit behind here.
Would still like to figure this out though.
