SQL field was created by Alan Smith

I would like to use the SQL custom field to do any of the following:

pull in data with different datatypes (text, date, integer) from an external table
use a WHERE condition to filter
use JOIN in the query

I assume the query shoudl be posted in the Values box.
Any examples of the preferred syntax would be most welcome - not much to work with in the documentation...
