External URLs was created by Ric Raftis
I have established via support ticket that it is not possible to put a remote URL into the Downloads area. With large files such as videos it is always a good idea to host these on Amazon or some really cheap hosting to save your bandwidth. Also stops people stealing them from your own server.
Cheers,
Ric

We need this feature as well. Or at least allow us to designate docman documents (either by direct link to the document or user permissions) which can use external download links .
I'm certain we're not the only two. Perhaps it can be done if several of us pool resources to pay for the feature to be developed?

Thanks for your supportive comments Virginia. My way around it at this stage is to create a PDF document with download instructions if that is any help to you. Bit like your Docman comment.

That's ok, but it requires allowing unlimited downloads of the product.
I just discovered that J2Store has both DropBox and Amazon S3 add-on extensions which generate of time sensitive links in the confirmation email.
This means it is not an unreasonable feature to expect be made available for eShop.

Sometimes the issue of unlimited downloads is a balance against bandwidth implications on your own server. Particularly relevant with videos. It's a matter of weighing up the pros and cons and making your own decision.

yes, the bandwidth and the fact that php download doesn't play well with really large files makes having the ability to have remote storage linkage essential.
If Docman and J2Store can do it, there's no reason why a plugin to allow eShop to do it can't be crafted.
