With Gmail changing their allowance of emails and third parties, Does joomla configuration offer you the option to setup Google Email via the API instead of the SMTP Connection?
As Allan answered, as of right now, Joomla core does not support SMTP Connection for Gmail, so you will need to find and use a third party extension. Maybe that would be supported in the future
