Custom Field Question

I am working on a site that provides instruction to sea kayakers and sometimes a person needs to rent equipment for some of the longer trips. I would like to add a custom drop down that would add in the amount of rental gear to the total amount that is to be payed. I can get the custom field to show during registration but the amount does not get added into the final price.

My other option although not as favored is just adding rental gear as an event, but I would rather have the drop down option if I can.

The custom fee field feature should work. Maybe you are doing something wrong with the setting. Do you mind submit a support ticket give me administrator and FTP account of your site so that I can have a look at it ?
