Price text field not appearing

I have an event set up with multiple price options using a custom field with the pricing. The price field in the event was left empty and text was added to the Price Text field.
When I add a dollar amount for an early bird discount, the event then shows on the frontend as Free and the Prce Text field does not appear. If I add a percentage for the discount instead, the Price Text field appears.
If it possible for the Price Text field to appear when there is a dollar value for the discount rather than saying 'Free'?
