Is there any way that the system could allow a customer to search key words by date rather than presenting just a list of available events?

Will a search bar at the top of event list like this joomdonationdemo.com/eventbooking/ help ?

If so, you can go to Events Booking -> Configuration, find the config option Show Search Bar, set it to Yes to enable that option
