In some cases, due to SSL issues in a three-party credit card payment, guest registration won't work and a login is required to secure the transaction. At the moment, the error messages (when there are any) are too vague to be useful. In some cases, there is no message at all - the CC gateway (Stripe) simply doesn't accept the insecure transfer - but EB 'completes' the registration, recording the incomplete CC payment as 'pending.' No message of any kind is sent to either the user or the site administrator, never mind a meaningful one ('bad CVV number', card expired', 'insecure network connection detected, contact the site administrator for login credentials.').
I think I can edit some of these fields to help make the warnings more clear, though probably not the Stripe errors. (A login does facilitate a completed transaction.)

a 'spit' is a rod upon which savory food was roasted, turned in ancient times by a worker called a 'jack', a middle English word for an ordinary laborer (eg jack of all trades, steeplejack, lumberjack). Today, this job is usually referred to as a 'pitmaster'.
