Short Description and Long Description

How do you change the length of the text in the event display page.

Specifically, fields "Short Description" and "Description"

I have changed the "type" in the database to "longtext" and it has made no difference.

Change the database type to longtext should be the right option. Exactly what issue you are having? Normally, I think text should be enough to store description of event

Had the "Auto Readmore" plugin installed.

Disabled and worked fine..
