a 'spit' is a rod upon which savory food was roasted, turned in ancient times by a worker called a 'jack', a middle English word for an ordinary laborer (eg jack of all trades, steeplejack, lumberjack). Today, this is done by a 19th C machine.

Any way to improve the iconography, such as font awesome or images, without editing php?

note: i did do an edit and (I hope) a successful override. I needed to at least match the next/prev month to the year, and changed the 'month' characters thus.
Code:
‹ to match «
› to match »

You should be able to do something in CSS with FontAwesome... for example:
-- note: wrote this before your second post showed up on my screen
--
Code:
#next_month, #prev_month {font-size:0.1px;}
#next_month:before {content:"\f0da"; font-family:Font-Awesome; font-size:14px;}
#prev_month:before {content:"\f0d9"; font-family:Font-Awesome; font-size:14px;}
