Free Membership doesn't Assign Usergroup was created by Tim Johns
I've been using this plugin since it was purchased a couple years ago. We've recently made some changes... updated Joomla to 3.5.1 and created a 'free membership' plan. This new plan, for some reason, does not assign to the usergroups (using the usergroups plugin). I know it used to work. So I don't know if it's from updating Joomla or because when setting it up as free, it doesn't go to paypal and charge them. I believe after they paid is when it would assign them to the usergroups.

I just tested on J3.6 (its whats on my dev box) and MembPro2.5 (I'm assuming this is a MembPro question even though its in EBooking section of forum). Not reproducing that issue.

I guess a lot more info will be needed -
What group are you adding them to
Is it a free plan or a plan with a coupon that makes it free
Version of MembPro
What status shows in the backend for the member
What payment processors are published

Thanks for the quick response, Calum.

I'm using Membership Pro version 1.6.5. Sorry, by the way, for posting in the wrong forum... I didn't notice I was in e-booking.

Since we're going to be offering membership for free for the next 6 months, I found a quick work-around. I'm using Community Builder along with Memberships Pro, so I just set CB to allow all access to profiles. I could have also made it just allow access to 'registered'. The usergroup that I had originally allowed access to and had MPro set up to add to was a custom usergroup, 'members'.

I have it set up for a free membership (no coupons). Just set the price to 0. The status is 'active'. I'm sure the PayPal plugin is still in use (and will eventually be used again), but it doesn't go to paypal because I have the amount set to 0. It just displays the thanks for subscribing page.

Like I said, I found a temporary work-around, so it's not a big priority right now to fix it. Eventually, it will be paid again and I will need it working. Would you suggest purchasing a new membership with you guys at that time and updating to the newest 2.x version? Maybe that will alleviate the problem.

By the way, I just noticed I wrote an article a while ago suggesting this as an alternative to paying $200 for CB Subs (the subscription part of community builder). Hopefully others have found that useful. I just updated the price (it was $29.99 back then).

Hi Tim

I should clarify - I'm a user and sometimes hacker of the software not part of the 'team'.

But I suspect the first thing anyone is going to say is - that is an OLD bit of code! An update would be well in order.

Been a while since I even looked at CB Subs but that seems a pricey package. I did a little time in CB Code and I'd never go back there again. My coding is bad - but it made mine look good! You'll find the responsiveness of Tuan and the boys hard to beat.

No worries, Calum... an extra 'thanks' then for answering this on your own time. You did bring up a question I had for you, though. I agree about the coding in CB... do you have another solution that's coded better and provides the same features as CB?
