Verification Code?

The verification code is the captcha image that users need to enter to ensure that they are people and not bots.
In Configuration, there are 2 options that control Captcha:
1) Enable captcha protection (turns the feature on or off)
2) Bypass captcha for registered users (does what is says)

If you haven't set up the Recaptcha plugin with your Google Recaptcha keys, then that might be part of the problem too.Go to Extensions -> Plugins and find the Captcha - ReCaptcha plugin. You'll need to register at www.google.com/recaptcha to get your keys.

I wonder if you have #2 turned on, and unregistered users are seeing a none-working Captcha whereas registered users are not?

Could you please ask the customer for what browser they are using? I know that Joomla core recaptcha had problem with IE 11 (see github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/10601 )

This is now fixed in Joomla core last codebase but only avaialble when version 3.6.0 released. Could you please ask him to see whether he is using IE or not?

If he is using IE, then I think we can package the recaptcha plugin from Joomla core code repo, upgrade it to your site and the error should be gone

That was my first guess, so I turned it off for the time being. The captcha-recaptcha plugin was set up correctly.
