SSL required to configure payment was created by carrie hobbs
Do I need to have an SSL on the site in order to use the paypal integration?

A developer can let you know if it is an absolute requirement (Tuan is usually on during business hours, Taiwan time), but here are my thoughts:
It would definitely be a good idea to have SSL as PayPal usually sends information back to your site to confirm payment, and keeping that secure would be safer. Also, users are entering personal/private info into your site that they are trusting you to keep secure from prying eyes.
I prefer to run SSL just to give some front-end protection to my customer's info even if I am not taking credit card info myself on the front-end. You can pick up a basic SSL certificate for around $6/year from GoDaddy via this link that I found on google: ca.godaddy.com/offers/default.aspx?isc=s...sl_5&pcode=310211712 (I wish I had found this link when I replaced my certificate 4 months ago for $70/year )

It would be good to have but it is not needed. Usually, you would use SSL on the site if they need to receive payment using a credit card based payment method such as Paypal Pro, Authorize.net , Eway....(customers enter credit card information directly on your site to process payment)
In case you use Paypal, customers will be redirected to Paypal for processing payment, so the payment process is secure and SSL is not required/not really needed.

In my suggestion you should get an SSL even you are not accepting payments. With knowledge any ecommerce site with paypal payment ask users to login and provide you their confidential information. To make their provided information safe, you should have ssl on your site. As James has already suggested, you can find ssl for $4 per year onwards.
