Custom Fields, application of this feature?

Hi all
Could someone who is familiar with Custom Fields kind of give me (and I am sure others too) an idea of how to use this feature, and what sort of thing a person might use it for? I am asking here because although I want to experiment I don't want to screw up the program since it is working so nicely. I have only had it for a few days and we are already taking bookings for the workshop.

I see there is some information about this in the tutorial but I still would like to hear how some people have used this feature, it might give me some ideas.

I'm using custom fields for camp registrations: camper's name, age, dob, school attended, etc. You just create the custom field (the title will be the label on the form) and select from your list of events any (or all) for which you want the info. You can also indicate the order the fields will appear in on the form.
