Saving value of custom fields

I notice that if you fill out info like first name etc when you register for an event, it saves it and its already filled in when you register for another event...

is it possible to do this for custom fields?

Basically I have a field for a "nickname" for each event, but I don't want people to have to fill it out every single time.
Is there some way I can get the value to save like all the normal fields?

That's a shame. It would be a very useful feature.

Could some of the non custom fields be renamed to simulate a custom field?

For example, we don't require "organisation" but we could use "membership number" instead... we can make a custom field but it would be great if our users didn't have to re-enter this as it is something that stays with them for a lifetime.
