Pathway/Breadcrumbs

I'm looking for a means to make the pathway/breadcrumbs neater. Currently I have events separated out into two menu items by category. This makes the category repeat in breadcrumbs twice:
www.sdbluesdance.org/index.php/events/workshops
www.sdbluesdance.org/index.php/events/wo...iew_event&event_id=1

If I change things up further to add menu items to the event itself, it becomes an even greater mess:
www.sdbluesdance.org/index.php/events/wo...luesandbrewsoverview

I realise this is more a matter of the component interacting with everything else, but is there a way to recognise the menu item as the current category or event? It doesn't seem to be a problem on the main event page:
www.sdbluesdance.org/index.php/events
