Customers entering desired product quantity

Hi,
One of my clients is a fabric shop, and they sell cloth by the meter.
I know we could add a product option with a select list of fabric lengths (i.e. 0.1m, 0.2m etc) but the select list becomes quite long and is quite tedious to setup.
On the client's previous shopping cart system, customers could enter a free text field of how much they wanted (i.e. 0.2m) - and the product price would update based on the length selected.
This would also affect shipping calculations of course - as 2m of cloth weighs more than 0.2m.
Is this practical in eshop - how would you suggest doing it?
Or perhaps you could do some custom development for us to make it work?
