Perplexing permission problem

For a given category, whose permission is set to "allowed" for all user levels except for "guest" or "public", when signed in with "super user" credentials...I setup a joomla menu link to a specific category. I can view the page, but when attempting to use the page to "upload" documents...I get the following error messages

All setting remain the same except for the type of menu link. They are all referencing the same category...

Menu Type: "Category LIst" - (no upload button visible)
Menu Type: "Column Layout" - "invalid document or you are not allowed to view that document"
Menu Type: "Category Layout" - This one actually allows me to upload
Menu Type: "Table Layout" - "invalid document or you are not allowed to view that document"

I am perplexed as to why only the "category layout" option allows me to upload.
