Will the main joomla search pick up on edocuments (edocman documents) (providing the user has the appropriate permissions to view them?)

Hi

Yes. You will need to install and publish EDocman Search plugin (the file plug_search_edocman.zip in the package). After that, EDocman documents will be displayed when users perform search via Joomla search module .
