Profile ID/Custom Field Data Types was created by Chris Jarvis
Hi Tuan
I wanted to ask if we can have a custom field as a number field or if it is possible to have the Profile ID field appear on the subscriber/subscription page?
I am looking at linking data from the Subscriber table of OS Membership and a database we have of our members.
I am trying to choose whether to use the Profile ID field in the Subscriber table and add that against our database records for a unique number or add our unique id to the OS Membership profile as a custom field or an added core field in subscriber database table.
I tried adding a custom field against the profile details of OS Membership subscribers and have started adding our database number to it but have realised that I can only pick a text field option to suit this best and that won't let me then link to a number field in my other database.
Is it possible to allow a number field be used in a custom field instead of a long text field to match?
I get the message can't join on Memo, OLE, or Hyperlink Object when I try at the moment.
Everything is working so well with the User Profile and us adding our database ID to the Membership Pro extension that I don't want to change things too much.
No problem at all if this isn't possible I will use the Profile ID I can see in the Subscriber table to match to our database instead.

Hi Chris
The number custom field type is not supported in Membership Pro at the moment, and I don't think you can use that field, too because data for custom field is stored in a separate table and it is difficult to link with your separate table
So depends on your requirement, I think you can use profile_id field or maybe user_id field would be better

If you were use profile_id, I think you should use user_id field instead. user_id is unique for each users in the system and it can be used to link with data not in Membership Pro but data from all other Joomla extensions if needed

Thanks Tuan
I have worked out the links between the tables in Membership Pro and which field value and field ID my custom field would be but totally see your point about the field type not being used so I won't go any further with that.
I like your idea of User_ID as that seems to be the Joomla User ID too isn't it? I probably will use this one for what I need as I want a reliable unique ID for one person each time.
I can see that subscriber id covers maybe the same person but with 1 or more different subscription records and types of membership. I saw the the profile id and liked that this covers and explains this when 1 person may have multiple memberships.
Thanks for the advice. It has certainly helped me along the way.
Thanks

Hi Chris
Yes. user_id is actually Joomla user ID, and it can be used across your site
profile_id is OK, too, as it is unique in Membership Pro for each subscriber
id is not good as you can see, each user can have different subscription records, and each record has it own id
Hope it is clear now

Hi Tuan
A little over a month ago you really helped me out with the user_id field in Membership Pro being a great link to another database I have with member details .
You confirmed this is also the Joomla ID and a great way to link to other components of yours we use too. Thanks again for this.
A month on and everything is working so well but I wanted to ask for some advice on the Available Tags we can add in to the emails and messages available through Membership Pro.
I have tried to add the user_id field to the Admin emails for subscriptions, renewals and upgrades as a tag but it displays the persons name instead of their unique user_id.
Can you tell me if this is possible and what I am doing wrong? It returns data great but not the info I expected.
The admin email reads like this but I think I am using the wrong tag at the moment on the [USER_ID] part.
The email reads and words perfectly but next to Joomla ID: It says John Brown instead of Joomla ID: 123456
*******ADMIN EMAIL*********
Dear Admin
A Membership Subscription has been processed via the website.
The details are as follows:
[SUBSCRIPTION_DETAIL]
Joomla ID: [USER_ID]
******END OF ADMIN EMAIL*************
I want to thank you again for the previous help as the field link up between tables has been so very good for us. If I can get the ID number to appear in the emails next it will complete all the good work
Thanks as always

Hi Chris
I remember there was a typo and I fixed it. I will test it again and update the download package on server with this fix this afternoon
You can come back to our website, download latest package (I don't release new version for this small fix) on tomorrow, update it and it will work OK
Regards,
Tuan

Thanks YET again Tuan
I've updated Membership Pro and the updated Tag for [User_ID] works perfectly.
I can't thank you enough for all the help and advice for this whole thread and where it has got us.
The link up between data sources and appearing on emails is such a massive help.
Thanks again
