Barcode , Qrcode feature: need your input was created by Tuan Pham Ngoc
Hi All

I am thinking about implementing barcode, qrcode feature into Events Booking. Since I don't have experience with it, I would like to see your suggestions about how it should work so that I can implement into the extension.

About barcode :

1. If I understand correctly, we will just generate bar code image (based on Transaction ID of the registration) and display it in the registration complete page and in the email so that registrants can print it for verification ? Is that correct ? Or it works in different way ?

2. What bar code type should be used (as there are many bar code types available).

About qrcode :

I think we just need to generate a qrcode image on registration complete page ?

Hope to receive suggestion from you so that I can implement this feature properly into the extension.

Regards,

Tuan

Tuan,

We do use barcode feature with some of our other sites for checkin. This would be a nice feature. I know that barcode feature would work much better than a QR code at least for what we use. The major barcode settings I've seen are:

Code 39
Code 39 Extended
Code 93
Code 128

Great idea!

Thanks!
Carlos

Good to insert support for qrcode/barcode... but i think is a great idea if you create an app on ios/android to check and validate qrcode/barcode generated in Event Booking like "jTicketing"

Sounds like an awesome idea!

I also think that bar codes are quicker read using a phone (QR codes can take forever, especially when you are standing outside in freezing cold)

This will definitely be a great addition to the extension. In actual fact, it is the only thing stopping from using any of the available Joomla event manager extension. Including yours for my site. I had to develop a site in Wordpress so I can use EventEspresso, a very powerful and arguably the best CMS extension/plugin in the market today (in addition to being able to generate qr code, it also has free ios and android scanning apps that event mangers can use to checkin guest at the event). The unfortunate thing is gnat it is a Wordpress plugin meaning you are out of luck if your site is developed in joomla.

Like Luca pointed out above, a QR or bar code without a supported scanning app for iOS or android is literally useless. You can generate the QR or bar code but if there is nothing to scan and check guest in at the event, the purpose is largely defeated. Event organizers want to be able to check hundreds of guest without doing it on paper or typing attendance manually on the computer. That is why companies like ticketmaster and eventbrite are thriving today. They have free apps for event managers to use for guests checkin at the gate.

Yes... have a component that generates barcode tickets without an app for scanning them is useless
See Jticketing or ticketmaster....

Hi,

Actually there is an app - though not free, ~ 7 euro in the AppStore (from Apple). It's called iCody. It can handle any type of QR/bar-code. Perhaps you could use that? It you get that to work, than later on you can work on a custom made app.

Has a barcode reader been decided?

Please keep it simple and just do a plugin with icody like Ticketmaster:
rd-media.org/extensions/ticketmaster/ico...fi-scanning-app.html

I use android phone and there are plenty of free qr and barcode code readers. What they mostly do though is to open up the website that is defiend by the qr code. So I guess for Eventbooking, what would the QR/barcode be for? If it just displays a barcode that corosponds to the URL of the event booking, how useful would that be?

I agree with the other comments here that you would need to offer someway of having a mobile phone app for android, ios and microsoft that could read them and link into the booking system - that sounds like quite a big project and perhaps there are other features people want in Eventbooking first?

I have actually moved on to a different software for a new site of mine as I needed a barcode check-in feature.

VikEvents actually does a check in with qr code. You can use any bar code scanner as it is a web address.

Any user with the correct permissions on the website when logged in and they scan a code (activate link) it changes the user(checked in person) status to "Checked-in", will display a system message if this user has already been checked in.

The system works great, with no need for a special or costly phone app. I would suggest a similar method. VikEvents all though a well written piece of code, lacks a lot of features that Events Booking has, I still recommend Events Booking to other event producers.

I really hope to see this in a future release.
